guitar student, need advice

i am a semi advanced guitarist ( I’m only 14). I have been teaching myself guitar with the progressive guitar method series of books. I want to be a professional guitarist when i get older, and i am asking for suggestions on how to get better. If you know of any books, exercises, or websites that would help please tell me.

also i play acoustic and electric guitar, and i can finger-pick and i can also use a pick.

And I would like to learn a wide range of guitar styles (classical, rock, jazz, etc)

If you wanna be a pro, then learn to sight read. Aside from that, I think you should seek out 1on 1 instruction. Aside from that, I’ve been told by better musicians than myself, to practice your scales,up to 8 hours a day. The idea is, get 1 on 1 instruction! Practice your scales up & down through the circle of fifths. Play chromatic scales the entire length of the instrument.Play all the modes through the circle of fifths.Practice just technique for 30 minutes straight. Just hammer-ons for 5 minutes, then just pull-offs,…then just slides,….then just tapping,…..then just all harmonics,…..then just all special effects, like picks slides, feedback tones, volumes swells,…..lastly,practice all your cool looking stage moves in front of a mirror to make sure they actually look cool.

lots and lots of blues scales, mix them up. theyre so much fun and end up sounding pretty awesome. They also give you ideas for some great guitar solos for song writing.

wow, i’m 14 and i play guitar too. one way to get better is to practice a number of styles, and alternate picking techinque.

2 good songs to practice alternate picking are:
sweet child o mine- guns n roses
    welcome home-coheed and cambria

Mechanics of Metal…….. That’s a good book. Learn the music that you like to listen to. Metal is based on classical acoustic music like J.S. Bach and other medevil composers. Everything evolved form classical music in one way or another. Most important, play what you like.

Start with the blues. All good guitarists need to start with blues. Even if you like all that metal stuff like me, start with the blues. It teaches you so much rhythm you’ll be amazed.

Well I’m 14 aswell and a professional guitarist. To get to this postition I have stopped learning the tab for a song that I may want to learn, instead I listen to the song and work it out from there. To use this method first listen to some fairly basic songs with just a 3/4 chord main riff and work those out. After a while you will be able to progress to harder songs and after a year or two you will have an invalable skill that only the best musicians poscess. Also you will need to learn the basic blues scales ,and some other less common ones, and routes across the fretboard to make you inpovisation exciting. for instance you could use part of a mixolydian during a minor blues to spice things up. Also, I am pleased that you want to learn blues, rock and jazz rather than metal as this requires lots of skill and not just speed when playing 2 notes.
