How do I learn to keep time in music?

I’m learning classical guitar and the hardest part for me is keeping time, can anyone suggest some exercises to help me learn?
will an electric metronome work?

Before you get a metronome, you need to understand the concept of what a beat is (or pulse). Listen to music and try to tap your foot (or bob your head, snap, etc) to the BEAT. For our purposes, a beat CONSTANT and EVEN. I suggest Disco to listen to first. It’s not terribly fast and slow enough to keep you going. The drums also often times keep a constant and simple pattern to find a beat.

Songs to listen to to find a beat (just a suggestion)
Dancing Queen – ABBA
Jive Talkin’ – Bee Gees
Knock on Wood – (forgot who did this)

From then on, when the beat is INTERNALIZED can you move to the metronome. I’m assuming you also are pretty good at reading rhythm (quarter notes, half notes, dots, etc.)

When learning with a metronome, start slow and here’s the important thing to remember…:PRACTICE RIDICULOUSLY SLOW BUT ACCURATELY EVEN IF IT HURTS. Do it RIGHT about 3 to 5 times then add a click or two more to the metronome and repeat the process. It’s going to take time so keep at it every day.

I play metal but I had the same problem, man.
    So here’s what to do.
    Metronome. That’s the only key.
Start off VERY slow, then gradually work your way up.
Trust me dude, been playing for a while. :)

yes get a nice metronome to use with the pieces your working on. Also play along with recorded music. Another cool idea is to get one of those little egg shakers and shake along when listening to any music.

    good luck!
