is it necessary to learn classical music on a guitar before learning flamenco?

I would like to learn flameco on my guitar, but there are no books on the subject unlike classical guitar. Is it necessary to learn classical music on a guitar before learning flamenco?

Not at all.

It’s ideal that you start learning flamenco from a flamenco teacher and flamenco has it’s own unique set of techniques and playing methods.

However since good flamenco teachers are rare it’s not a bad idea to have a good classical teacher to start learning the basics of guitar.

Even though when you try to switch from classic to flamenco it will be a bit difficult at first to forget some habits and apply new flamenco style.

Check out the books of Juan Martin on teaching flamenco. They are very famous and take you step by step into the world of flamenco.

I don’t think its entirely necessary to learn classical music on guitar, but its better to get the basics of music theory down on the guitar. So it would be helpful, but not necessary. Have fun!
