Should I learn classical or jazz guitar to correlate to indie rock?

I want to play in a indie rock band as a lead guitarist and i’ve hit a wall in my learning. A guitarist told me that i should learn guitar from its roots, as in classical and that will help me in all aspects of rock but ive also heard that jazz guitar is better for being improvisational. Which style of guitar should i learn to play?

YES it totally will help you. Both Jazz and Classical will vastly improve your playing, if you learn from a good teacher. If you want to be able to play like Yngwie Malmsteen, go for Classical. If you want to be able to shred like John Mayer, go with Jazz. But honestly, learn both! Make sure you find a good teacher and PRACTICE a ton, and I’m sure you’ll see great results.

You’re going to hate me, but both!
If you’re interested in playing indie rock, and NOT jazz in gigs, then learn the harmony and approach of jazz. There are many good resources out there for this. Jazz guitarists know the neck inside and out. Plus there are some very interesting chord shapes and types. It also opens the door for you to be able to improvise if you guys have any open sections in your songs. But you do not necessarily need to spend the time on learning tunes, bebop vocabulary, and swing.

Classical guitar can give you some interesting technique. Finger style playing can really open the door to some new things for you to do in your band. It also can give you some new ideas on how to approach parts (using open strings, etc).

I would suggest finding a good jazz teacher and telling them exactly what you are wanting to do. I am open to a dialogue in this area as well.
Another step would be using something like Rhapsody or YouTube to find some jazz and classical music that you find inspiring. Being into indie rock, I would check out Ben Monder (pretty out there), Bill Frisell, and Mike Moreno.
    Hope that helps!
