What is a good book to learn to play classical guitar?

I have played electric and acoustic guitar for about 8 years, primarily rock, metal, and the occasional blues. Recently i have had an infatuation with classical guitar, and i want to learn to play properly. I would want to learn all of the proper fingering styles and techniques so i don’t start with bad habits. I’m primarily interested in Spanish classical like Andres Segovia. Thanks for reading, i appreciate any help.

P.s. if you want to recommend me a good classical guitar that would be cool too :-)

Tim: a good beginners book on Classic Guitar that is simple, straightforward and not too fast paced is: "You Can Teach Yourself Classic Guitar" by Will Bay. It is a Mel Bay Publication and available at most music stores for about 12 dollars.

Keep in mind, however, that the finger-picking hand posture will need to be learned from a teacher or other classic guitarist…a book will not demonstrate adequately the proper (and very important) hand posture for success.

Good luck to you.

Not a For Dummies book, that’s for sure. I would look for a book written by a renowned master of the instrument.

In my case, that would be Pepe Romero, but it seems he doesn’t fancy himself a writer. His brother, Celino, however, wrote "The Art of Spanish Guitar." And according to the reviewers on Amazon.com, it is perfect for "motivated beginners."

P.S. I wouldn’t recommend trying to emulate Segovia’s technique. It would be like emulating Robert Schumann’s piano technique.

Any of the Frederick Noad books. Recommend "PLAYING THE GUITAR" published in 1963, now in it’s third edition.
