What is the best method to learn classical guitar?

DONT buy the Estaban crap. Its awful.

If you can, get lessons from a live teacher. Check with a local music store to see if they can recommend one.
If you cant get a live teacher, the Aaron Shearer books are very good. They teach you technique and how to read music, so you arent confined to using tabliture.

just go to amazon and search for Aaron Shearer.

I took a class at a Junir College, then went on to private lessons. There are videos out there on guitar instruction also.

In Canada, we have a Royal Conservatory of Music: a kind of formal system for gauging skill in different levels of classical performance. I’d imagine such societies exist in most countries; ask them the best place to start. Failing that, put up a poster in your local university’s music faculty; music students always need money, and someone’s bound to be a guitar specialist!

Be sure when you’re buying your guitar that you’re buying the correct kind of classical, or Spanish, guitar: many people try to learn classical fingering on a steel or folk guitar, and the results are inevitably poor, not to mention painful. Real Spanish guitars will have more space between the strings than a folk guitar, and its strings will be nylon, not metal.

    Have fun!

Classical guitar is harder to learn on your own than rock guitar, so formal lessons from a good teacher would be helpful, especially with the technique. You should definitely learn to read music if you don’t already. A number of published methods are available, I most strongly recommend the Carcassi method, which I know Mel Bay has an edition of, and find yourself a book or two of etudes by Fernando Sor. A few others to consider are Abel Carlevaro and Leo Brouwer and some repertoire from Heitor Villa-Lobos. Also listen to as many recordings as possible, most notably Andres Segovia.

Learning the guitar is much easier with a good guitar teacher? But what makes a great teacher?
