Can you recommend a good method for learning flamenco guitar?
UnfortunatleyI can’t go to Spain, but if you’ve had good a experience with books, software, websites etc. send me your recommendations please. I can read music, play a little classical and strum but thats it.
A good self-starter to learning Flamenco is to learn to play the song, "Malaguena." It has a much recognized melody form commonly addressed in Flamenco and is great to improvise once you’ve learned the rapidity of the movements.
Grow out the nails on your right hand and practice arpeggios by "fanning" the strings down and then upward, one finger at a time until they become a blur.
Esteban, of course, is one prime example of a Flamenco artist, but so too is Paco De Lucia, a brilliant artist combining the old with the new innovations of Flamenco.
A method……… hmmmmmmmm – I checked the Mel Bay site – they have an amazing variety of guitar instrucion books. The Guitarra Flamenca paso a paso (II) – by Oscar Herrero – looks good. http://www.melbay.com/product.asp?productid=98185DVD
the Juan Serrano is widely used –

Just go to http://www.melbay.com and do a search for "flamenco methods" and you’ll see ten pages of things.

Buy the very best guitar you can afford – even duff notes will sound pretty nice. Find a teacher locally who has a passion for his or her music. Learning from books and tapes is very hard, you will miss out on the support and encouragement of a true proficient.
