How can i get better at guitar?

I play guitar and i’m not as good as i’d like to be. Any exercises or stuff i should look into? I play Metal and Rock stuff.

You will have to accept the fact that there are many methods but no real shortcuts. You must accept the fact that to be truly as good as you can be means dedicating lots and lots of your personal time to practising every day. At least an hour a day at a minimum. You will be a better musician if you take lessons from a teacher, preferably one who can teach you the classical method. It will seem extremely boring and repetitive at first, but that as they say is paying your dues. One other thing to keep in mind. You will never be as good as you would like to be, because the better you get the better you want to be and there is always another level to strive for. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Obviously, establishing a regular practice pattern is a must.

Force yourself to sit down and practice everyday, eventhough you may not feel like it.

Record yourself playing…you can hear your stong and weak points and areas that need improvement.

Play with others. You’ll get 10 times as good in a year playing with others as you will sitting alone in your room.

Finally, when away from the guitar, visualize the neck..see your fingers on the guitar neck playing whatever it is you’re working on.

Lets see… I’ve only played for one year and Ive gotten to where people say stuff like "How do you do that?" I play almost every day for 10-30 minutes a day while I watch tv so basically, the longer you play, the more you will get used to strumming and fretting and keeping a steady beat. Practice makes perfect is said so many times, but it is actually very true. A good exercise is to find a variety of different guitar tabs and you will get used to the style of playing different things. Some basic songs that are good to practice on are Hit Me With Your Best Shot (kinda gay song tho), Iron Man, Inside the Fire, Raining Blood (a little complex tho) and a good one is Never Too Late. Hope this helps.

The best advice I could give someone who wants to get better is simple but difficult: Practice, practice, and practice slow. Many players (including myself at times) are victims of their desire to play better than they are able to, and so they play too fast without mastering the technique. This usually results in sloppy playing. Find a song that you can say to yourself, "if I were a little bit faster than what I am now, I could play this." Then break down your playing, even though it may be boring and tedious, and make sure you are playing everything 110% perfect, and then build your speed up from there. It takes time but in the end you’ll be happy you did.
