How can I make my fingers more flexible when playing the guitar?

I’m learning how to play classical guitar and it’s become really easy to learn the chords. The biggest obstacle I have is that my fingers don’t seem flexible enough to flow through some chords in a song. Are there any methods I can use to make my fingers more flexible?

there is a device that you can get a music shop that you use to strenghten your fingers

get a gripmaster and dont over do it, it will work WONDERS, and also do hand stretches and hand excersizes everyday..all the old rockers, like rush and those bands cant really play anymore because there fingers have lost their dexterity from not doing excersizes

Practice, practice, practice. This builds the muscle memory to move more quickly in the chord progressions. Warm up you hand muscles just as you would your whole body for a good workout.

I use to be a bass player, years ago. Best exercise I did is as follows.

Make a fist. Holding fingers 2 and 4 down, raise fingers 1 and 3. Then alternate. Then do it faster and faster.

This will help you coordinate your fingers more independently and improve dexterity and placement accuracy.

    Try it!

I started playing the classical guitar first and all I can say is practice practice practice ! If you learn scales that can help but practice is the only thing that will help with getting better. It took me over a year of playing every day to get to the place I wanted to be.

PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY.

At least two hours per day ; one hour in the morning and one hour at night. Do NOT use any of those finger exercise things or hand grip things….they can damage your fingers or hands. The only thing to improve your guitar playing is by guitar playing.
Changing chords is always difficult at first ; that is why we practise. Be patient…it will happen.

Well, the first thing that will help the most is lots of practice! 😀

    But for further training…

    Do some simple excercises.

These will NOT damage your muscles or tendons in anyway, unless you use them so severely that you cause yourself pain. Be gentle with yourself :)

    Start with the hand-stretch
Stretch your fingers out as far as they will go (without causing pain!) and hold the position for 20 seconds.

    Then do 20 hand clenches
Do this by starting with the same position as the stretch, and clench your hand together. Make sure your thumb is not inside the fist.

Then do 10 seconds of the Hand-Stretch

    Now do the "pray-flip"
Hold your hands flat against eachother in a prayer position, and flip them out by opening them toward your chest and continuing to fold out to where your thumbs touch. Do this 5 times.

10 seconds of the Stretch again

    Now do the Ball-Stretch
Start with the hand-stretch position and bring your fingertips together as if you were holding a large ball. Hold for 20 seconds.

This is the hardest. Pianists and string player love and hate this. It gets easier after a while.

Hold your left hand relaxed against a table, your hand should not be flat. Raise your fingers a little with your fingertips still touching the surface of the table. Now raise just your ring finger and pointer finger. Relax them back down. Now raise your thumb, middle, and little finger. Relax them, and repeat 5 times. Later on, after about a week of these excercises, this will be much easier.

But for the first week this one is soooo hard.

Finish off with 10 seconds of hand-stretch.

Good luck! And of course, practicing will help you improve flexibility and dexterity also.

    😀
