If I learn classical guitar, I should be able to play metal right?

Okay, so I’m taking an Elementary Guitar class at my local community college, because I want to learn to play the damn guitar sitting in the corner of my room. I’ve also wanted to be in a band since I was like.. a wee lad and shit.

So my question is; After I learn to play classical guitar, would it be hard to shift my style to solely playing metal? Cause after all, I gotta start somewhere right? And it’s not like they offer ‘how to play metal guitar’ at my college.. so yeah.

No – not at all. Classical guitar is only played fingerstyle and never with a pick. Metal is always played with a pick. You will learn some basics of the guitar, a few chords, and some other useful stuff but you will not learn to strum or pick individual or sets of strings using a pick.

You’re better off with private lessons.

If you can play classical guitar, you can play any damn thing you want. But it will take longer than a year or two to really learn classical, like 5 or more.

You’ll learn the fingerboard, which is something. You’ll learn how to read, which will put you ahead of most of the guitarists out there. You may actually start liking classical guitar!
But other than theory, there isn’t much crossover.
That’s not a reason not to take classical guitar, and there are some classical "shredders" out there–but that’s not necessarily music
